Two Gresley giants
Both locomotives came out of the LNER works at Doncaster and from the drawing board of its chief mechanical engineer, Sir Nigel Gresley.
Flying Scotsman was built in 1923 and became the railway's star. In 1934 it became the first steam locomotive officially recorded at 100 mph. It has been owned by the National Railway Museum since 2004 and is probably the best-known locomotive in the world.
Mallard followed in 1938, one of Gresley's streamlined A4s. On 3 July 1938, running down Stoke Bank near Grantham, it reached 126 mph, a world speed record for steam that has never been beaten. It is part of the National Collection at the National Railway Museum.
Between them they cover the golden age of British steam: the green elegance of the 1920s and the blue streamlined speed of the late 1930s.
